When India partitioned in 1947, Gujral moved to Delhi and Started Moti Mahal is his new home city, Darya Ganj. The Place quickly proved popular and within a year and kundan Lal Gujral turned his small road side eatery into a 400 seat restaurant. He deduced tomato gravy, lushed in butter an cream that soften his left over chickens. The combination proved to be a master stroke and tus, by accident or an act of genius ,the butter chicken was born.

Gujral served his iconic dishes, butter chicken, Dal makhani, Chicken Pakora, Mutton Burrah here in moti Mahal Daryaganj Delhi. Later in 1970’s Kundan Lal’s son, Nand Lal Gujral expanded Moti Mahal in South Delhi to establish Moti Mahal Delux chain of restaurants.

Ashim Gujral has placed Moti Mahal on the International map of connoisseurs. Under his Chieftain, Moti Mahal has expanded to an empire with its own brands such as Moti Mahal, China Wall, malabar Cafe, Hoo’d Terrace Lounge
